Healthcare pro turned horse breeder buys Ballantrae condo

Carl Pollard and his wife, Bebe, bought a three-bedroom, three bath condo in the Ballantrae development at 4333 N. Ocean Blvd. in Unincorporated Southeast Palm Beach County for $2.2 million from Patstrum Holdings Limited on July 21, 2006.

Unit #0032 is one of 39 in the Ballantrae.

Mr. Pollard is the owner of Heritage Farm, a 700-acre farm that breeds and raises racehorses in Goshen, Ky. He bought the farm, located approximately 20 miles outside of Louisville, in 1994. Under his ownership, the farm has produced five horses that have competed in the Breeders' Cup, including Caressing, the winner of the 2000 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

The Kentucky native has also served as the chairman of the famed Kentucky Derby site Churchill Downs, as well as the former president of the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs. His careers outside of horse racing include stints as the former president and CEO of the Humana health care company and as the owner of the Louisville and Lexington branches of the popular chain of Nevada Bob's Golf stores.

He earned his bachelor's in business from the University of Kentucky (1960).

Condo sales in Unincorporated Southeast Palm Beach County dropped 36 percent in 2007. The median sales price also dropped $67,000 last year, from $527,000 in 2006 to $460,000 in 2007.

Condo sales in the Ballantrae dropped 33 percent in 2007, and the median sales price dropped $300,000, from $1.9 million to $1.6 million.
