Q&A With Keith Sonenson

by Nick Rees, published June 8, 2009 ·

Keith Sonenson knows a thing or two about moving — whether it's moving people into new homes, moving products internationally or simply moving people across town.

Sonenson started his professional career after college when he owned a fleet of taxi cabs that he leased to drivers. At the same time, Sonenson was also in the wine and liquor import and distribution business. But he saw that the real estate business was booming in 2004 and he made the leap, selling his taxi cab business and turning what he thought would be a side project into a full-time career.

He spoke with BlockShopper.com about getting started in a new career, how technology lets him continue working internationally and the quiet community of West Boynton.

BS: Are you a Florida native?

KS: I'm originally from Long Island, but I came down here in 1994 for college. I went to Florida Atlantic University and studied finance and international business there with a minor in real estate. I've stayed here ever since because it's such an easy life with the weather and everything else.

BS: Why did you leave your other businesses for real estate?

KS: I've got somewhat of a background in real estate. My father owned buildings in New York. With the boom going on, it was something I was interested in. I didn't really intend to make it a career — it was just a transitional thing. I just got my license and started focusing on it and it went from there.

BS: Did you face any stumbling blocks in getting started?

KS: Without a doubt, my background in business helped my to quickly catch up with other successful agents. I obviously wasn't getting repeat business when I started so I had to work to get going. I was the first person into the office and the last person to go home. I treated real estate like it was a business and that I wasn't just an agent. I invested in doing business, in the technology to get ahead, and now, because of my website and advertising campaigns on behalf of my sellers, I do a lot of repeat business.

BS: Why do out-of-staters and international clients want to move to West Boynton?

KS: West Boynton is a nice mixture of both adult communities and all-age communities. It's in a great location close to West Palm Beach, Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale. It has some great master-planned communities. The city has a great reputation. West Boynton is a quiet community with some shopping. People move to West Boynton as a second home or to retire. Young families also like it as a place to establish and raise a family.

BS: What's the market like in West Boynton now?

KS: West Boynton is a more upscale place than Boynton Beach, with never developments, club house communities, and single-family homes at a distinctive class level. It's unmatched in other areas. Boynton Beach has an average of 1200 sales versus 900 in West Boynton. The average sale price, though, in Boynton Beach is $136,000 and West Boynton is $236,000.
